In short: the Site sets one small cookie of its own to remember your choice, and Google Analytics cookies only if you accept them. No advertising cookies are used today. If we add advertising later, those cookies will also stay off until you accept them. You can change your mind at any time.
What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files that a website stores on your device. Similar technologies, such as local storage and tracking pixels, work in much the same way. Some are essential for a site to work. Others measure how a site is used, or support advertising. We use the word “cookies” in this policy to mean all of them.
Your choices
When you first visit, a banner lets you accept all, reject non-essential cookies, or choose by category. Strictly necessary storage is always on, because the Site cannot remember your choice without it. Everything else stays off until you opt in. Rejecting is as easy as accepting.
You can open the settings again at any time, from this link or the “Cookie Settings” link in the footer, to change or withdraw your consent. We keep your choice for up to 180 days and then ask again. We also ask again if we change what we use.

The Analytics cookies are set only after you accept the Analytics category. Durations are the maximum we expect and may be shorter in some browsers. Staff who sign in to manage the Site receive standard WordPress login cookies; visitors do not. The contact form does not set cookies on visitors’ devices.
How Google Analytics respects your choice
The Site uses Google Consent Mode. Before you choose, and if you reject analytics, Google Analytics storage is switched off: no analytics cookies are set. Because the Google tag still loads in this mode, your browser may still contact Google’s servers and Google may receive limited signals, such as that a page was loaded, without cookies or advertising identifiers. As with any web request, that includes your IP address. If you accept analytics, cookies are set and Google Analytics measures how you use the Site. Google states that Google Analytics 4 does not log or store individual IP addresses. See How Google uses cookies.
In the UK, the law allows some low-risk statistical cookies without consent. We ask for your consent anyway, so that your choice is the same everywhere.
Advertising cookies (planned)
We expect to start using Google AdSense and affiliate links soon. When that happens, advertising cookies from Google and its partners will be set only after you accept the Advertising category, and we will add each cookie to the table above. For visitors in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, personalized advertising will be shown only with consent collected through a consent tool that meets Google’s requirements. You can opt out of personalized advertising at Google Ads Settings or www.aboutads.info. See our Affiliate & Advertising Disclosure for the current status.
Third-party content
Some older articles show images that are loaded directly from other organizations’ servers. Your browser contacts those servers to fetch the images, and they may record your IP address and browser details. Those servers are outside our control. We are replacing these images with ones we host ourselves. The Site uses your device’s fonts and does not load fonts from a third-party service.
Managing cookies in your browser
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. If you delete cookies, we will ask for your choice again. Blocking all cookies does not stop the Site from working. Guidance for the main browsers is at allaboutcookies.org.
Changes to this policy
We will update this page when we add or remove cookies, and change the date at the top. Where we add a new type of cookie that needs consent, we will ask for your choice again.
